Associate Chief Judge Gurmail S. Gill was born, raised and educated in British Columbia. He received his Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in Biochemistry, in 1979 and his Bachelor of Laws degree in 1983, both degrees having been obtained from the University of British Columbia.
Called to the bar in 1984, he practiced at the private bar, engaged primarily in civil litigation and criminal defence, until his appointment to the Provincial Court of British Columbia in 1994. He was appointed Administrative Judge in 2007 and Associate Chief Judge in 2009.
Judge Gill actively employed computer technology in his law practice during the late 1980s and early 1990s, and since approximately 1999 has been using his laptop on the bench. He has served on the Chief Judge’s Technology Committee and remains keenly interested in exploring the potential for computer technology in the judicial workplace.
